Why Did Employer-Provided Housing Increase My Dependency?

Employer-provided housing initially reduced cost or made relocation easier, but later increased the consequences of employment uncertainty. Losing or leaving the role also threatened accommodation. The question is when convenience became dependency and whether the combined downside was recognised beforehand.
